It is only since I’ve started to take an active interest in the fate of Northern Ireland players that it has actually dawned on me how few professional footballers sign anything more than 12 month deals. Something close to 50% of the squad that travelled to Amsterdam for the friendly against the Netherlands have got an uncertain couple of weeks ahead as they try to pen new contracts.

Northern Ireland links: New contracts for McGovern, Feeney and Taylor, McCourt to move, Craigan retires, McCann banned

With the European domesitc season over and Northern Ireland players not headed for Euro 2012, all attention has now been turned towards next season. For a very lucky few in the Northern Ireland set-up, they are already sure of what their club will be. For quite a few others, the next couple of weeks will be crucial as they were only able to sign 12 month contracts this time last year.
