It is only since I’ve started to take an active interest in the fate of Northern Ireland players that it has actually dawned on me how few professional footballers sign anything more than 12 month deals. Something close to 50% of the squad that travelled to Amsterdam for the friendly against the Netherlands have got an uncertain couple of weeks ahead as they try to pen new contracts.
